Color Pencils and Oils

 

You remember this motif. It is the Fairy Hill I painted in oils. This one is color pencil. And so are the following three.

 Another one of the boulder pieces with rocks, seemingly in motion. I wonder if it would work to balance them out like this.

In this case, I doubt the stony, solid matter and let the rock shine. Radiance, radiation. The natural radiation of rock material is a phenomenon that -- imho -- is still not understood by humans; we have to proceed in evolution to fully understand that. Maybe change our understanding of matter in general.

This one surely will remind you of those I painted earlier on in gouache or water color. This time, I used oils again. That's why there is a disturbing reflexion on the upper part, hope you don't mind. It is the layers theme again. It is a challenge to do this in oils. It might be easier in acrylics; I will try that, too. But the temptation to sum up transparent layers makes me use oils again and again. This is not finished, though; there will be more layers on the darker parts to make the bright lines shine as brillantly as possible.

Oils for a Change

After having painted with watercolors for years, I came back to painting in oils. I restricted my art on smaller formats and paper, mostly because I just don't have enough room to store larger paintings any more, since I moved into one flat with my husband 10 years ago. And there were years when my health issues kept me from starting larger projects, I wasn't feeling strong enough to do so. Now I do, and I have put my easel in place with a feeling of joy. Sorry to say that sewing and quilting at the moment is not quite my cup of tea. Something has changed, and I guess it's me.The painting I am working on has a story. Often I started my projects with preparing a painting board by applying some surface structure.

In this case, I cut out stripes of heavy card material and glued then onto the board, shaping something like a ground plan, securing it by glueing more paper strips over the structure. Then I make an acrylic base layer and start painting.

This one has been standing there for years because I lost the plot. Time went by, and I made some undecided attempt to continue, but did not like it and painted it over.

Now, I found a way to integrate the structure into my "Boulder" series. The boulders will probably become darker by being washed with more transparent layers, as soon as the paint allows them. The size of the painting is 27x12", the material is way too heavy.

Painting finished

When I was working on "Joseph's Colourful Coat", I let this picture stand unfinished for a long time. I just wasn't sure how to go on. A few weeks ago I went on with it and changed the bottom part completely. I cannot tell you what it is, I just shmeared the oils onto it and enjoyed the shades. Then I decided that I did not like the background; a shining kimono in front of a night-blue sky just seemed too pathetic; I dissolved it into blue patches and made the border between the coat and the background less strict. I dimmed down the patches and brightened up the red.
