Tatzelwurm

The "tatzelwurm" (paw worm) is a mythical animal of Bavaria, the Alpine Nessie. I started a gouache sketch in a limited palette of brick red, slate blue, light purple, copper green, dark aubergine, clay and tangerine.
I'd like to remain rather abstract, in the style of Paul Klee, but I slip into the naturalism trap time and time again.

I think there is a little Quetzalcoatl in that worm, at least in the embroidered version.

This looks as though it will be charming, despite your wish to remain more abstract. I really don't think it's possible to get entirely away from ourselves; our sensibilities creep in despite everything - and that's ok. At least I tell myself it is ok!
